Former vaudeville and burlesque performer Silvers (1911-1985) starred in film comedies from the early 1940s, and he won two Tony Awards on Broadway (for Top Banana (1950) and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1971). His biggest success was probably on TV, however, cast as Sergeant Bilko, winner of five Emmys in the sitcom You'll Never Get Rich (1955-1959). As the head NCO of the motor pool at a small Kansas army base, Bilko was constantly scheming to disprove the old adage that "you'll never get rich" in the army. Paul Ford, as base commander Colonel Hall, ineffectually tried to curb Bilko's shenanigans. ALLAN MELVIN, as Corporal Steve Henshaw, and MICKEY FREEMAN, as Private Fielding Zimmerman, were accomplices in Bilko's capers. Melvin had no major TV or film credits beyond the Silvers show.
